Think of Resilience as “Vitamin R”

It’s a bit of a buzz word at the moment – but Resilience Tools have an amazingly positive effect on our ability to ‘Bounce Back’ from life’s challenges, improve our mood and develop confidence.

Instead of feeling overwhelmed by “life” – we learn how to protect ourselves from “crashing”, keep afloat and manage the boomerangs life sends us.

When I was extremely ill with ME/CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) my ability to bounce back was zilch; absolutely no energy, pain, severe insomnia,, sound and light sensitivity…a nightmare.  Resilience for me then was about holding on by my fingertips and to be perfectly frank, being bloody minded that somehow I would recover.  From my personal experience and extensive training in this field for 10+ years, I now know that real resilience needs both a physical and mental approach.  One feeds into the other.  This is why I now include gentle holistic yoga into these courses – believe me, “The Power of Slow” is powerful indeed!  Soothing the nervous system, easing out pain, supporting and improving our immune function, digestion and calming the mind…this is where resilience starts…take care of the body and the mind, and the rest will fall into place.

Whether you have a health condition or are juggling multiple hats in life, finding running your own business stressful or are HAPPY where you are – but recognise that to maintain that balance your health needs nurturing…Resilience has to be in your tool kit.

Resilience in a nutshell…

Psychology Today describes it this way:

“Resilience is that ineffable quality that allows some people to be knocked down by life and come back stronger than ever. Rather than letting failure overcome them and drain their resolve, they find a way to rise from the ashes.”

In a nutshell, resilience can be defined as the ability – and tendency – to “bounce back.”

What’s the Meaning of Bouncing Back?

Bouncing back” is what we do when we face disappointment, defeat, and failure, but instead of wallowing or letting things keep us down, we get back up and continue on with our lives.

According to the APA Help Center, it’s “the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress” (APA, n.d.).

You might say someone bounces back when they experience a traumatic car accident and sustain serious injuries, but stay positive and optimistic through a long physical therapy journey.

My 4 week Birch Moon Resilience course builds your Resilience Tool Kit – great for you AND you can teach your children.  Drawing on the work of Resilience expert, Dr Chris Johnstone, we will explore practical strategies that help you deal with tough times, learn creative problem-solving and improve self-care.

Gentle yoga/movement, meditation and relaxation techniques are also taught (see my explanation on the THRIVE! course HERE for more details)

My own Resilience was seriously tested, stretched and improved when I was extremely ill with ME/CFS – from bed bound to house bound to slowly being able to get out the house and walk again…it took far longer than I could have ever imagined to get my life back. But get it back I have. I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that all the tools in my tool kit – from positive psychology and resilience skills, to gentle holistic yoga and meditation to name just some – were instrumental in getting me back on my feet and beyond. It’s a real joy to share my professional and personal experience and support you in taking the next step to great self-care and improved health.
